The EPR Waste Association of South Africa NPO (eWASA) has launched a transformative partnership with the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP), investing R697 300 in a comprehensive initiative that combines environmental sustainability with social upliftment in Bellville.
This groundbreaking collaboration, supported by the City of Cape Town, represents a significant step forward in eWASA’s mission to revolutionize waste management while creating meaningful economic opportunities for communities in need.
“Supporting waste reduction alongside socio-economic upliftment is central to eWASA’s mission,” says Etienne Basson, National Project Manager at eWASA. “Our partnership with GTP demonstrates that sustainable community development can only thrive when we invest in both environmental initiatives and individual well-being.”
The initiative was officially launched at Bellville’s Recycling and Buy-back Centre on 4 December 2024, with key stakeholders including Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, and Warren Hewitt, CEO of GTP, in attendance.
eWASA’s financial investment will provide crucial income subsidies for informal waste collectors based on their recycling contributions. The program encompasses comprehensive training, resources, and support systems designed to transform waste pickers into self-sufficient entrepreneurs.
Through this partnership, eWASA aims to:
- Significantly reduce landfill waste through enhanced recycling efforts
- Create sustainable income opportunities for homeless individuals
- Establish a model for integrated waste management and social development
- Support the broader Bellville community in adopting responsible waste practices
The initiative includes the deployment of a MellowVan, starting January 15, 2025, which will facilitate recyclable collections from local businesses and schools, extending the program’s reach throughout the Bellville community.
“The initiative between the GTP, who the City proudly supports, and eWASA exemplifies the value of forging collaboration,” noted Alderman Vos during the launch. “Not only will this project critically reduce the impact on landfills, but it will also empower members of the community with necessary skills.”
Looking ahead, eWASA and its partners plan to expand the program’s recycling capacity, create additional employment opportunities, and implement sustainable practices such as localized composting. These initiatives align with eWASA’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community development, positioning Bellville as a blueprint for sustainable urban transformation.
