The EPR Waste Association of South Africa (eWASA) is excited to announce a partnership with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) to boost electronic waste management in the region. On 3 September 2024, the NMBM Council approved the implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between eWASA and the municipality, marking a significant milestone in sustainable waste management practices.
Key Highlights:
- Comprehensive E-Waste Management: As a registered Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), eWASA will oversee the collection and recycling of electronic waste at all of Nelson Mandela Bay’s drop-off sites.
- Job Creation and Economic Growth: This partnership aims to formalize e-waste management into an organized and profitable sector, creating new job opportunities and fostering the development of Emerging Micro Enterprises (EMEs).
- Environmental Impact: By efficiently managing e-waste, which includes discarded electronic appliances such as mobile phones, computers, and televisions, we will help extend the lifespan of drop-off sites and reduce environmental pollution.
- Community Engagement: eWASA will work closely with companies and community-based waste collectors to ensure efficient collection and recycling of e-waste.
Councillor Thsonono Buyeye, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Health, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating: “The signing and implementation of this memorandum mark the beginning of a ground-breaking, comprehensive, and sustainable waste management programme.”
At eWASA, we are committed to creating a sustainable waste management economy and working towards eliminating the concept of waste in Nelson Mandela Bay. We call upon all residents to join this initiative by responsibly disposing of their e-waste and supporting efforts to combat illegal waste dumping.
Together, we can build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for Nelson Mandela Bay and set a precedent for effective e-waste management across South Africa.
